Is the story you are telling yourself about your life helpful? Is it pulling your forward or holding you back?
I know. The story of your life seems absolutely, totally true. I’m not here to bring doubt to the facts of your life, I’m here to help you questions whether maybe your interpretation of it needs to shift.
For example, you can decide what it “means” that you’ve faced a recent rejection or challenge. Maybe it’s not a sign that you are worthless. Maybe instead it is a helpful cue to modify your exact goal, or change your strategy, or network with different people, or build some additional skills.
The story you tell yourself is everything. In fact, it’s not just you telling it, it’s the world around you. The full quote from Cheryl Strayed in Wild is:
“Fear, to a great extent, is born of a story we tell ourselves, and so I chose to tell myself a different story from the one women are told. I decided I was safe. I was strong. I was brave. Nothing could vanquish me. Insisting on this story was a form of mind control, but for the most part, it worked.”
Those types of mind shifts are immense. If you have the time to hike the entire Pacific Crest Trail to gain that type of mind shift, please do (and post heavily on Instagram! I want to see it!)
