My friend Mark goes on these rants on social media. A recent rant was about stores that go way outside their stated type of goal to sell unrelated items. “I’m not going to the grocery store to buy a shirt! What makes it even worse is that your avocados have gone bad while you spent time on the clothing display!”

Do what you do and do it well.

If the grocery store was more focused on produce (it’s main mission) and less on clothing (not it’s main mission) maybe the avocados would be up to date. Their main mission actually suffered for the sake of their side hustle.

When we stray outside what we do well, we end up struggling to do the other thing, and our main mission suffers.

Focus on your avocados. There’s someone else to sell shirts, who wants to sell shirts, and does it better, because selling shirts is their gift.
