What we’re asking about leaders

Do you have unofficial holidays that mark your years and help you see how you and the people around you have grown?

For me, one of those is The Extravaganza. It’s a gathering of Lutherans who focus on Children, Youth and Family Ministry throughout the United States. Over my decades of attendance I’ve taken on many roles from participant to speaker to creative producer of the Main Stage.

I’ve gotten to see the event grow and evolve as it hops from city to city, coast to coast, year after year. I’ve gotten to see particular people grow and evolve. And now I get to help the host organization grow and evolve.

This year, one of my roles was to help the Board of the sponsoring organization think about leadership pipelines. Where do we find new leaders? How do we understand the gifts of the next chapter of potential leaders? How do we help potential leaders understand the culture of the organization while still giving them room to influence the direction of the organization?

When was the last time you considered those questions in your own organization?

I love to think big and then create big results that honor where you’ve been and where you’d like to go. If you or your organization needs to think big and then make a concrete plan, let’s talk.
