Where do you notice beauty in your daily life? A painting at home? You in your favorite outfit? The elegance of a well-designed aisle at Target?
My favorite artwork is the sky.
I’m in rural Missouri, at a theatre where I’ve worked many times. I have some favorite people and places that I always visit (you’ll see a few in season 2 of “A Dairy Tale” starting October 15!), but one of my favorite “places” here is the sky.
The sky, to me, seems like one huge piece of ever-changing art. I kind of love that it is being created by forces well beyond our control, and somehow still creates a cohesive picture.
And although it’s above us no matter where we are, our experience of it changes depending on where we are. Our view may be framed by a window, or dotted with buildings, or feel expansive, as it does in farm country.
And maybe life is that way, too. A situation happens around and above us, but our experience of it changes depending on where we are. The next time something seems overwhelming or frustrating, maybe consider how you are framing it, or what else you are seeing in the picture.
And then maybe step outside to see the sky and take a moment to reflect. Because that’s what art can do – remind us that beauty and order surround us all the time to lift us out of the chaos of our lives. The change in perspective may be all you need in order to figure out how to move forward.
