Why be Mary when Martha’s having all of the fun? Yes, that’s the name of a production number in Church Basement Ladies: the Musical.
It’s sort of a joke, because the characters in the show are celebrating the exact opposite of the well-known story of Mary and Martha. They. Never. Stop. We do the whole show while prepping, serving, and cleaning up meals, integrating the kitchen utensils into the production numbers. It’s clever, actually, the way the writers structured it.
The characters are proud of working without ceasing, they are proud to be “Martha’s,” but for those just joining us on this Mary/Martha saga: Mary stops to listen and learn, while Martha keeps on working. In the Bible Story, it turns out that Mary is doing it right, by not doing anything.
Stop. Listen. Learn.
How can you do more of NOT doing more?
We talk about Mary and Martha in this summer’s VBS for Backyards. It’s five whole weeks of Female Bible Friends.
The VBS is all digital and can be done by an individual adult with adult-side questions (like the one above!), plus crafts, songs, and everything else you expect at VBS. It can also be done by families using our Questions for Young Disciples, or an entire church who want to create a hybrid experience or offer something to families who can’t attend in-person VBS. It’s written from a Lutheran perspective but accessible to all progressive theologies.
