Someone asked me the other day whether I’ve become fully “Brooklynized” or if I’ll come to Manhattan for a social event.
I said that Brooklyn is just where I sleep and run errands. Manhattan is still where I live my life.
I live in Brooklyn in the sense that my things are there in my apartment, but I haven’t built relationships in Brooklyn beyond my yoga teacher, Pilates teacher, the bodega owner who sells me Diet Coke, immediate next-door neighbors, and the doorman.
Manhattan is where I go for the friends I’ve met over the last 16 years, my church, and any important event. Manhattan is where I run into people I know nearly every day, which I love.
Beyond that, I coach people all over the United States and have community with them. My own coach lives in Paris, and we are in regular contact. I also cultivate deep relationships with friends and family in all four time zones, talking nearly daily with people who are elsewhere. I also perform shows for weeks at a time in the Midwest.
And I love having these deep connections all over the place.
So while I live in Brooklyn, my heart and my attention are in so many other places. It leads me to question whether you live where you keep your things or live where you keep your heart.
So if you see me in Brooklyn, I’m probably running errands or on my way to Pilates.
Do you keep your things and your heart all in one place, or are they scattered all around?
