I went to (another) Marvelous Mrs. Maisel private event and was reminded of how excellence is the result of entire teams of people catching a vision.
Although The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is clearly the brainchild of Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Paladin, something so huge cannot become excellent without others not just understanding the vision, but getting excited about it and taking it further.
Amazon (their producer) had to agreed to expensive location shoots. The set decorators and costumers didn’t just make those locations look like the 1950’s, they developed elaborate color palates for each scene. I went in for a costume fitting, and I’ve never experienced so much attention to the color, fit, and details of a costume on a character who is just in the background. (BTW, I didn’t end up doing that shoot.)
The Director of Photography had to figure out complicated patterns so shots can be done without cutting away. (They have a LOT of that, and it’s not easy on the crew.)
The actors have rehearsed for hours to get the timing of long scenes, which is not normal for television.
Amy and Dan mentioned how their show is technically difficult, and they have started to attract some higher level crew who have gotten a bit bored on other shows that are easier to shoot. People who get excited for the challenge.
Excellence attracts excellence. And once all the teams work together toward a true “Marvelous” show, it takes on a level that’s fun for viewers to witness and ends up with an Emmy Award or two.
There was no way that was ever going to happen if Amy and Dan, the show runners, were the only ones truly excited about the vision. It wasn’t about attracting people who “understood” what to do. It was about everyone being there with their whole heart.
When have you worked on a team that is so committed to the vision and having so much fun being great, that the massive amount of work does not feel hard?
