Today’s take: The Three Kings are kind of the spokesmodels of Epiphany.

Epiphanies of all sorts are exciting, and of course we can’t know exactly when we’ll get an epiphany (the surprise is part of the fun!), but we can look to the Three Kings to figure out how to create the conditions to make epiphanies more likely.

Maybe the kings can even help us strategize our next move.

  1. Take action, even before you know where you’re going. We need to not just sit and think about the direction we may go, we need to be “westward leading, still proceeding.” We need to take the risk to actually do something, and trust that something will come of it. When we just sit and think about something instead of taking action, we don’t allow the world around us to participate in our epiphany.
  2. Don’t be afraid to go somewhere new. After all, you know all of the possibilities in the place you already are. These kings were from faraway lands. They followed the star to Bethlehem, of all places. Who even heard of Bethlehem before this?!? Sounds like it wasn’t much of a world capital. It made no sense, but there they were. They packed a snack, brought gifts, and followed the star to an unknown place.
  3. Play the long game. The Three Kings probably didn’t get there in twelves days, although it makes a fun song. It probably took weeks and months of consistent progress. Keep your eyes up, whether or not you can clearly see the “star” that’s guiding you, and keep moving. The epiphany will come when it comes, but at least you are moving toward it.

May you have many epiphanies this season, and throughout the year.
